"The Night the Lights Come
On" is the annual Christmas celebration in Shenandoah
the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Its origin stems from
the night the new streetscape lights were turned on
downtown in the year 2000. After months of darkness
during construction, the downtown sparkled with the
lighted Christmas trees and new stylish street lights.
Today, the downtown lights also feature lighted deer
on each corner. One thousand lights adorn the giant
60 foot Christmas tree next to city hall. During the
celebration Santa turns on the lights and visits with
children during a soup and pie supper at the Fire Station.
Bricker Botanical Center also debuts the "Night
the Lights Come On." Downtown merchants are open
late during the Christmas season for shopping convenience.
